Prof. Georg Winckler is an Austrian who was born on 27th September 1943 in Ostrava (Czech Republic). He studied Economics at Princeton University (USA) and University of Vienna. He got his PhD from University of Vienna in 1968.
He worked as Research Assistant at the Institute of Economic Sciences, University of Vienna, between 1968-1975. In 1971/72 he was Membre du cadre, Pont-à-Mousson S.A. (Saint Gobain S.A.), Nancy, France (in corporate planning). Between 1976-1978 he was Assistant Lecturer at University of Vienna. In 1977/78 he was Visiting Professor, Graz University and Université Fribourg, Switzerland. In 1978, he became Professor of Economic Theory and Policy at the Institute of Economics, University of Vienna. In 1985/86 he was Visiting Professor at Linz University, and in 1990/91 he was Visiting Scholar at Research Department, International Monetary Fund, Washington D.C. (USA). In 1992/93 he worked as Visiting Professor at Linz University, and in 1995 as Visiting Professor of Economics, Department of Economics, Georgetown University, Washington D.C. (USA). In 1998 he was Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Mathematics of Comenius University in Bratislava (lecture "Intertemporal Macroeconomics").
Prof. Winckler is member of many councils and boards. Between 1993-1996 he was Member of the Council of Scientists  of the International Association for the Promotion of Cooperation with Scientists from the New Independent States of the former Soviet Union (INTAS), European Union, Brussels, and between 1995-1999 he was Member of the Economic, Social and Human Sciences Panel for TMR Networks (Brussels), Community Programme of the European Union, which, among other duties, is tasked with selecting economic research projects.
Between Jan 2000-Mar 2005, he was Chairman of the Austrian Rectors' Conference. Between 2001-2005, he was Vice President of European University Association (EUA), Brussels-Geneva, and between 2004-2007, he was Member of the European Research Advisory Board (EURAB). Between Mar 2005-Mar 2009, he was President of the European University Association (EUA), Brussels-Geneva. From 2008 – 2012 he was Member of the European Research Area Board (ERAB), and since April 2009 he is Member of the Board of Trustees, ETS, Princeton, New Jersey, USA.
From 1999 until 2011 Prof. Winckler was the Rector of the University of Vienna. From December 2011until December 2019, he was the President of the Erste Foundation, the main shareholder of the Erste Group Bank. Since December 2019, he has been the Chairman of the Alphaplus Foundation, a non-profit foundation of the Austrian Science Fund.
Prof. Winckler’s main professional focus is monetary policy, European currency integration and macroeconomics.
