Dr. Michiharu
NAKAMURA joined the
Central Research
Laboratory (CRL) of
Hitachi, Ltd. in
1967, after
receiving his M.Sc.
degree in Physics
from the Graduate
School of Science at
the University of
Tokyo. As a
researcher, he
worked on the
development of novel
electronics devices,
and contributed to
the incubation of
distributed feedback
semiconductor lasers
and high-speed
electronics that are
widely used in
optical
communication
networks today. He
received his Ph.D.
degree from the
University of Tokyo
in 1975 for related
research. He was a
visiting researcher
at the California
Institute of
Technology from 1972
to 1973.
In
1992, he became the
10th General Manager
of Hitachi CRL. As
GM of Hitachi CRL,
he managed advanced
R&D in the fields of
information &
communication
technologies (IT),
electronics and life
sciences, and
expanded global R&D
activities. In April
2001, he became Head
of the Research and
Development Group of
Hitachi, a position
covering such fields
as energy,
transportation, and
materials in
addition to IT,
electronics and life
sciences. In April
2004, he was
appointed Executive
Vice President and
Executive Officer of
Hitachi. He assumed
his current position
of Board of Director
in June 2008.
Dr. Nakamura is
currently engaged in
a number of public
activities. He is
serving as the
Chairman of the
Steering Committee
on Council of
Competitiveness
Nippon (Japan), the
Chairman of the
Sub-Committee on
Strategies for R&D
Priority Areas of
the Japan Business
Federation, a member
of the
Nanotechnology &
Material Project
Team established in
the Council for
Science and
Technology Policy,
the Chairman of the
Steering Committee
of Industrial Users
Society for Neutron
Application, and the
Chairman of the
Steering Council of
Tsukuba Innovation
Arena . He is also a
visiting professor
of Tokyo University
of Agriculture and
Technology.
Dr. Nakamura is a
member of the
Physical Society of
Japan, Fellow of the
Japan Society of
Applied Physics,
Fellow of the
Institute of
Electronics,
Information and
Communication
Engineers (Japan),
and Fellow of the
Institute of
Electrical and
Electronics
Engineers
